Printer Troubleshooting: Laser vs Inkjet

A printer ticket is a technology ticket first. CompTIA A+ Core 1 (220-1201) splits that work across three objectives: deploy the device (3.7), maintain the right consumable for that technology (3.8), then match the printed page and the queue to a named fault (5.6). Laser and inkjet share paper, drivers, and a queue. They do not share maintenance parts. Treat the marketing title as the operational problem. Treat the official bullets as the testable map. What 220-1201 actually names

Domain 3.0 Hardware is 25% of the exam. Domain 5.0 Hardware and Network Troubleshooting is 28%. Printers sit in both.

3.7 — Given a scenario, deploy and configure multifunction devices/printers and settings.

3.8 — Given a scenario, perform appropriate printer maintenance.

5.6 — Given a scenario, troubleshoot printer issues.

The hardware equipment list under the same document names printer types as laser/inkjet, wireless, 3-D printer, and thermal. Impact appears under 3.8 maintenance, not in that short equipment list. A multifunction device (often written MFP in the acronym list) is one chassis that prints and also scans. Objective 3.7 names the scan path. It does not rename the print path.

The official document does not list imaging-process steps. Do not study a seven-step laser sequence as a 220-1201 named bullet.

Deploy the device before you diagnose the page (3.7)

Unbox the unit and choose the set-up location first. Heat, dust, and a cramped feed path create jams that look like a “bad printer.” The exam lists that decision as its own line.

Install the driver that matches the operating system. CompTIA contrasts two page languages:

  • Printer Control Language (PCL) — a vendor page language the driver sends to the printer.
  • PostScript — a different page language. The objective writes it as “postscript.”

Wrong language, wrong OS driver, or stale firmware produces garbled print (5.6). Update firmware (the software stored on the device) only from the vendor path.

Connect the device on one of the three paths 3.7 names:

  • USB — direct cable to one host.
  • Ethernet — wired network jack on the printer.
  • Wireless — radio path. The equipment list also flags wireless printers as a type.

Do not invent port numbers. CompTIA does not list them under 3.7.

A public/shared device is a printer more than one user can reach. CompTIA names two share models:

  • Printer share — one host shares the printer with others.
  • Print server — a dedicated service or box that owns the queue.

Configuration settings the exam names: duplex (print both sides), orientation (portrait or landscape), tray settings, and quality. Wrong orientation is also a 5.6 symptom: incorrect page orientation. A tray the OS does not see is tray not recognized.

Security settings the exam names: user authentication, badging, audit logs, and secured prints. Secured prints hold the job at the device until the user proves identity at the panel. That is an access control, not a toner fix.

Network scan services the exam names: email, SMB (Server Message Block — a file-share protocol), and cloud services. Scan faults are not print faults. Separate them.

An automatic document feeder (ADF) pulls a stack of pages through the scanner. A flatbed scanner reads one page on the glass. ADF misfeeds are paper-handling faults on the scan side.

Laser maintenance is not inkjet maintenance (3.8)

Laser. Official maintenance only: replace toner, apply a maintenance kit, calibrate, and clean. Toner is the dry powder a laser printer uses instead of liquid ink. A maintenance kit is the vendor-bundled wear set for that model. CompTIA does not itemize the kit.

Inkjet. Official parts: ink cartridge, printhead, roller, and feeder. Official maintenance: clean printheads, replace cartridges, calibrate, and clear jams. The printhead is the nozzle assembly that places ink on the page. The roller and feeder move paper. Liquid ink dries in nozzles. That is why 3.8 puts printhead cleaning on inkjet and not on laser.

Thermal and impact stay on the same objective so you do not mis-tag them as laser or inkjet.

  • Thermal: feed assembly, special thermal paper. Maintenance: replace paper, clean the heating element, remove debris.
  • Impact: multipart paper. Maintenance: replace ribbon, printhead, and paper.

If the chassis is thermal or impact, stop using the laser/inkjet checklist.

Troubleshoot the page and the queue (5.6)

5.6 is a symptom list. CompTIA does not print a cause under each line. Map the symptom to the technology you already identified in 3.8. Do not invent a part CompTIA did not name.

Paper-handling symptoms

  • Paper jams / paper not feeding / multipage misfeed — inspect the feeder and roller on inkjet; clear the path; confirm tray settings (3.7). On thermal, inspect the feed assembly and the special paper.
  • Incorrect page orientation — fix orientation in 3.7 settings before you replace parts.
  • Tray not recognized — tray settings and connectivity, then firmware.

Motion and noise

  • Grinding noise — stop the job. CompTIA lists the symptom. It does not name the gear.

Queue and path symptoms

  • Multiple prints pending in queue — the jobs sit and do not leave.
  • Frozen print queue — the queue no longer advances.
  • Connectivity issues — USB, Ethernet, or wireless from 3.7; printer share vs print server.

Queue faults are software-path faults until you prove the device is dark or offline. Connectivity faults are path faults until you prove the page itself is bad. Do not replace toner for a frozen queue.

How a ticket should move

  1. Name the technology: laser, inkjet, thermal, impact, or 3-D. Only the first two are the title of this article.
  2. Name the connection: USB, Ethernet, or wireless. Name the share model if other users print through it.
  3. Confirm driver language and firmware before you open the chassis.
  4. Separate page faults from queue faults from scan faults.
  5. Run only the 3.8 maintenance CompTIA listed for that technology.
  6. Record authentication, badging, audit logs, and secured-print state if the job never reaches paper.

That sequence is operational. It is not an extra exam domain.

What this article will not teach

It will not walk a laser imaging cycle CompTIA left out of Version 3.0.
It will not name fuser temperature, drum voltage, or nozzle fire rate.
It will not list print ports.
It will not dump exam-style questions.
